October is Transport Month, an important slot on the South African calen- dar to underscore the importance of our country’s transport sector. As a critical component of our economy, road, rail, aviation and maritime trans- port all contribute to a total of 8% of South Africa’s GDP (Source: Stats SA). Mirroring the various transportation industries, logistics and freight contribute an equally significant portion to the country’s economy, employing over 1.2 million people and adding 10.2% of the national GDP on an annual basis (Source: CSIR).

These statistics clearly indicate that transportation and logistics are at the core of our nation’s economy. Without it, the movement of critical raw materials, produce, and processed products can’t be moved within our border or exported beyond our borders.

Raising awareness of its critical economic role, from the employment sector, tourism industry, to mining and agriculture, is crucial. Everyday South Africans’ living standards improve significantly when government invests in transport infrastructure. Transport Month, therefore, enables the industry to advocate for more reliable infrastructure, integrated networks, and a fast-track critical developments that takes us closer to realising the country’s Nine-Point Plan.

Despite facing various challenges, I am optimistic about the future of South Africa’s logistics industry. If a synergistic collaboration between government and enterprise can be solidified, the entire country stands to gain by unlocking economic growth.
